Pollution Report (POLREP) #15
Site Description
EPA has been asked to investigate tetrachloroethylene (PERC) contamination in Hyattsville (Chillum), Maryland and Washington, DC.  PERC contamination was discovered in 2001 during an on-going investigation of a gasoline-products release from a service station located in Hyattsville near the Chillum Perc property.  The site under investigation includes a dry cleaning facility and a residential community.  The dry cleaning facility is located in Maryland and is immediately adjacent to the Washington, DC border.  Groundwater flows from Maryland into Washington, DC, and one or more plumes of groundwater containing PERC may be present beneath the local residential community.

Current Activities
A. During this reporting period, a public meeting and information session was held on February 12, 2004, at Lamont Elementary School.  EPA informed the public of on-going and upcoming site activities.  Analytical data from the summer 2003 EPA sampling event overseen by OSC Marcos Aquino was made available to the public (individual residents were informed of their results prior to the meeting).  No field activities were conducted during this reporting period.

B. EPA has begun preparation of resident letters summarizing PERC analytical results of samples previously colleted by Chevron (the residents previously received analytical data of gasoline-related constituents, i.e., benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene, MTBE).

C. Results from the December 2003 subcontracted surveying of the six small-diameter monitoring wells were received.

EPA met with individual residents at their homes to explain their results from the Summer 2003 sampling event. CIC Evans and Libertz spoke to residents about forming a Community Advisory Group.

Next Steps
A. EPA anticipates notifying residents of PERC analytical results for samples previously collected by Chevron.

B. Attend public meetings and prepare presentations of completed, on-going, and planned activities in response to the PERC release.

C. Plan for a second round of indoor air, soil vapor, and groundwater sampling to replicate work conducted in July-September 2003.  This second round of sampling is projected to occur in spring 2004.

EPA and ATSDR have been invited to attend a meeting with residents from Nicholson Street to discuss concerns specific to these residents.
