The W.R. Grace Site is located in Wilder, Campbell County, Kentucky. W.R. Grace ("Grace") owned and operated a vermiculite ore processing facility at 112 North St. from 1960 until the mid-1990's. Residues from the processing operation were disposed of on the Grace property and an adjoining tract as fill material. The vermiculite ore and the residues contain actinolite and tremolite asbestos fibers.
In April 2003, EPA initiated a time critical removal action at the site, at the request of the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (KYDEP). The scope of work involves removal and off-site disposal of up to 40,000 tons of asbestos-contaminated soil, and the decontamination of two buildings formerly used in the vermiculite manufacturing operations.
March 8 to March 25, 2004
ERRS continued site restoration activities, including backfilling and grading in excavation areas. Several trailers were demobilized from site including three decontamination trailers and one office trailer. Removal of these trailers allowed ERRS better access to the embankment along the property line. Soil from this embankment was used as backfill in the excavation area. During the week of March 15, 2004, ERRS reformed the concrete slab in the area behind the two site buildings, along the railroad spur. Additional grading was done on the parking lot area. Grading and restoration activities were slowed during this time due to several days of wet weather. ERRS began seeding the backfilled areas. During the week of March 22, ERRS completed seeding the backfilled areas and covering these areas with straw. ERRS continued preparing equipment to be demobilized from the site.
During the week of March 29, 2004, ERRS will complete the demobilization of equipment from the site. Also during this week, EPA OSCs Bass and Smith will meet with property owners of the site to discuss the completion of removal activities. All ERRS, START and EPA personnel will demobilize from the site.
