The Shelby Die Casting Co. (SDCC), established in 1957, performed aluminum die casting operations which included cleaning, quenching, mold casting and die casting. The raw material used on-site was aluminum ingots and the process of manufacturing finished aluminum die cast parts involved the use of various lubricants and solvents. The Site consists of two buildings; the die casting operation was first conducted in the building now designated as the equipment repair building (north building) and moved in 1987 to the current production building (south building). During the Removal Assessment, approximately three drums, four tanks and a clogged sump were discovered in the South Building; approximately 100 drums were found in the North Building, including one found submerged in the rainwater filling the decline ramp outside of the building.
The City of Shelby owns a parcel of land, occupied by the City’s water storage tanks and water wells, in the middle of the property which is approximately 200 square feet.
During the period of record (May 17 - May 22, 2004), the following removal activities took place:
- The majority of rainwater filling the decline ramp at the North Building was pumped out to determine if any other drums were submerged. No other drums were found in the decline ramp.
- One sample was taken from the tanks and one from the sump in the South Building.
- One composite soil sample was taken outside the SW corner of the South Building.
- All drums, buckets, and other containers suspected of holding hazardous waste were staged in Area 3 of the North Building.
- All containers were opened and sampled.
- All samples were hazard categorized and results were used to determine a bulking scheme.
- Composites were made from compatible samples for lab analysis. Samples not fitting into one of the bulking groups were sent for analysis individually. Approximately 28 samples were sent to the lab for analysis.
- Entrances into the staging area were blocked as best possible to attempt to prevent trespassers from tampering with drums while site work is not taking place.
Site activities have shut down while lab analysis is pending. When results are received and a disposal facility has been identified, Phase 2 activities will begin. Phase 2 tasks will include bulking like materials, overpacking drums with contents that cannot be bulked and disposal/recycling of empty drums. Removal actions involving the tanks and sump in the South Building and soil outside of the South Building will be determined once lab results have been recieved.
