U.S. EPA has completed excavation of 7,500 tons of contaminated source material and treated 418,000 gallons of contaminated water. U.S. EPA is using a Geoprobe to map out remaining smear zone contaminated soil and demobilizing heavy equipment and personnel. Excavation and backfilling continued daily until September 17th.
Site activities to date:
August 21 - 24, 2003 - Sampled water treatment system influent and effluent.
August 25 - September 5, 2003 - Three summa canister air samples were collected and shipped to the REAC. Analytical results showed no off-site impact. The soil washing unit was demobilized based on analytical results showing the soil to be non-hazardous.
September 6 - 17, 2003 - Five summa canister air samples were collected. Analytical results showed no off-site impact. Two additional polishing drums were added to the treatment system based projected breakthrough of contaminates. Excavation was completed.
Use a Geoprobe to sample the bottom of the excavation. Continue decontamination and demobilization of equipment.
Evaluate Geoprobe results need for a second phase.
