The EWR site has a long history of heavy industrial use from 1867 until 2012. The Waterbury Brass Company operated a brass rolling mill and various associated operations at the site from 1867 through 1959. From 1960 through 1975, Anaconda American Brass Company operated at the site. Anaconda’s operations consisted primarily of eyelet stamping, cleaning, pickling, and electroplating of copper, zinc, and chromium. From 1977 through 1998, EWR operated as a permitted Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF) at the site. In 1992, Pheonix Soils began renting and operating a contaminated soil remediation and recycling facility, wherein it intended to utilize a low thermal temperature desorption (desorption) unit to treat and recycle contaminated soil.
