Contaminated groundwater at concentrations above EPA Region 4 Removal Action levels was discovered by the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR) in a drinking water well. Further investigation by the Person County Health Department revealed that a total of three wells were contaminated with Tetrachloroethene (PCE).
NC DENR requested EPA assistance with the wells. OSC Tanner responded to the release by providing drinking water to the affected residents and sampling additional wells to determine the extent of groundwater impacted by PCE.
