2.1.1 Narrative
OSC Huyser met with MSDEQ and START in Clevelend, MS and mobilized to the site. An interview was conducted with the resident to accumulate background information on the property, its previous use, its current use, and reported impacts. The property was previously a 200 acre cotton farm that operated for 20-30 years; the barren spot sits under the previous location of a barn and shed structure. The shed stored various chemicals including: Treflan, Methyl Parathion, DDT, and Sancore. The barn and shed were demolished approximately 10 years ago. The shed which contained the chemicals was constructed alongside the main barn building, and chemicals were stored on the ground level. Mixing and diluting of chemicals occurred outside in various locations of the yard.
The homeowner reports that the property was inherited from his father and his brother (who is also deceased) operated the farm. No vegetation has ever grown on the spot from where the shed was removed. The homeowner experiences rashes and irritation after working on the land in the building footprint. There are no children living on the property, but the homeowner’s grandchildren come to visit frequently.
The groundwater well servicing the house has been closed and the residence, as well as the neighboring residences, has been serviced by municipal water for approximately 10-15 years. There is a runoff ditch behind the residence that flows along the property line from west to east; visual observations of the drainage ditch contents and overland flow patterns indicate that the septic system from the neighboring residence.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date - On 03JUN10 OSC Huyser and START mobilized to the site to evaluate.
A composite surface soil sample (0-12" bgs) was collected from the impacted area, and a sediment sample was collected from the nearest runoff ditch approximately 100ft on the eastern property boundary. The samples will be analyzed for, among other things, pesticides, herbicides, and organo-phosphates. Prior to demobilization, plastic sheeting was staked to the ground surface on the bare spot to prevent dust migration and direct contact. Further response actions will be determined after receipt of sample analysis results.
2.1.3 Enforcement Activities, Identity of Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs)
