2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative

EPA, START and ERRS continued efforts to mitigate mercury vapors within the residence.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
  • START collected initial readings from the residence and determined that concentrations of mercury vapors were still present within the home.  START observed very high mercury readings along the floor of the room four. Items were collected from the bedroom and placed in bags to allow mercury to vaporize from possibly contaminated items.
  • ERRS removed all furniture from the bedroom to remove the carpet.  Once the carpet was pulled back, mercury beads were observed along one wall in the bedroom.  ERRS began mercury removal efforts using a HEPA vacuum along the contaminated wall.  Once the elemental mercury was removed from the room, ERRS treated the floor with HgX.
  • START collected head space readings of the bagged items from room four.  High mercury concentrations were observed.  These items were again placed in the sun for many hours to allow for the mercury to vaporize.
  • START analyzed the conex boxes and roll off box to ensure the safety of the ERRS workers.

  2.2 Planning Section
    2.2.1 Anticipated Activities

START will continue to collect mercury readings throughout the residence.  ERRS will continue mercury recovery and mitigation operations.  Heavily contaminated items will be segregated for disposal at an approved disposal facility.

2.2.1.1 Planned Response Activities
  • The house will be ventilated over night to allow for HgX to dry and for mercury vapors to escape.
  • START will take mercury readings first thing in the morning to determine areas of concern.
  • After readings are taken, ERRS will bag items from the home and allow these items to sit in the sun for mercury to vaporize.
  • START will collect mercury readings from the head space of each bag to determine if the items can be returned to the family.
  • ERRS will continue the heating and ventilation process within the residence.
2.2.1.2 Next Steps
  • Continue to ventilate residence to allow for HgX to dry and for mercury vapors to escape.
  • START will take mercury readings first thing in the morning to establish areas of concern.
  • ERRS will continue to bag items and allow these items to sit in the sun for mercury to vaporize.
  • START will collect mercury readings from the head space of each bag to determine if the items can be returned to the family.
