1.1.1 Incident Category

A release of Methylene Chloride to secondary containment was reported the the NRC via report #953834.  The incident occurred over the weekend and was discovered at 0700 on Monday morning.  ZEP, Inc., commenced an emergency response using their in-house Emergency Response Team.

1.1.2 Site Description

ZEP, Inc, is an industrial complex located near downtown Atlanta, Georgia.  It consists of R&D, quality control, manufacturing, waste treatment, and distribution facilities.

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

ZEP, Inc, had a release of Methylene Chloride,a CERCLA hazardous substance, above the repotable quantity.  Methylene Chloride is a known carcinogen. 

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results

OSC Buerki met with John Herron upon arrival at the facility.  Inspection of the tank's secondary containment revealed that all of the material had been pumped out into totes, with the exception of the material that would have volatilized.

ZEP's in house Emergency Response Team pumped the spilled material from secondary containment into totes and had transferred the remaining Methylene Chloride into totes for re-use.  A new flange was installed on the tank and residual waste was being flushed into the containment sump and collected for disposal.
