1.1.2 Site Description
On 01/04/2011 at approximately 01:00 hrs a Norfolk Southern train derailed heading westbound through Douglasville, GA. Derailed cars were scattered along the rail line for approximately 0.25 miles along Broad Street. The rail line is bordered on both sides by a 15 foot embankment. The embankment contained most of the wreck along the rail line. Rail cars were mostly flat beds and gondola cars carrying intermodal containers full of consumer commodities. One trailer did contain heptane and methanol.

The site is located in downtown Douglasville, GA.
1.1.2.2 Description of Threat
80 pounds of heptane and 40 pounds of methanol were reported to be on some of the derailed cars. It was unknown at the time of the derailment if any hazardous substances were leaking.
1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results
EPA OSC Ball arrived at approximately 08:30 hrs as train wreaker crews Hultcher and R.J. Coreman were removing train cars and intermodal containers from the track. EPA met with Norfolk Southern personnel and conducted a walk around visual assessment of the site to determine if any hazardous substances appeared to be leaking. No leaks were observed and no odors were present. NS personnel identified the intermodal box that contained the heptane and methanol and were able to recover all product without a spill. EPA also met with Douglas County Fire to offer further assistance at the derailment. None was requested.
