1.1.2 Site Description
A train derailment along US Hwy 98 in New Augusta, Mississippi. Eighteen rail cars carrying fuel oil (manifest designation) and one methanol rail car derailed. During the derailment, some of the fuel oil and methanol rail cars were damaged and released their contents.

    2.1.1 Narrative
At approximately 0800 hours on 1/31/2014, a Canadian National Freight Train derailed in New Augusta, Perry County, MS. A total of nineteen (19) tanker railcars containing fuel oil and methanol derailed. Up to an estimated 50,000 gallons of fuel oil (per mainfest designation) has been discharged as a result of the derailment. The one (1) methanol rail was reported leaking in a separate area from the fuel oil. The fuel oil was discharged to a drainage ditch between the rail line and US Hwy 98. The drainage ditch drains to the Leaf River which is approximately 1/2 mile downstream. OSCs Francendese, Garrard, and Franco are mobilizing to the scene to oversee and direct response actions. Local Emergency responders have implemented a ½ mile evacuation zone surrounding the derailment, and the closure of US Hwy 98. The Red Cross has opened an evacuation shelter. Eight (8) individuals remain at shelters for the evening of January 31, 2014. Emergency responders are taking defensive measures to limit the impact of the spill while additional resources are mobilized.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
Earthern berms have been constructed in the drainage ditch between US Hwy 98 and the rail line to stop the migration of oil downstream. Responders have temporary stopped the leak from the methanol rail car.  Responders are currently mobilizing additional resources to address the derailed tank cars.  Rerailing and wrecking activities have begun and will continue through the night.
