The Cameron Area Mines are over 100 abandoned uranium mine (AUM) claims that are located mainly along the Little Colorado River and Highway 89 in Western Navajo Nation. Maps showing locations of the mine claims can be accessed by clicking "images" on this website. These mines were generally operated in the 1950's through early 1960's and subsequently abandoned. While the Navajo Nation Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program addressed many of the physical hazards associated with these mines, a legacy of contamination remains. EPA and Navajo Nation EPA are working to address environmental health hazards associated with these AUMs.
EPA, in partnership with Navajo Nation EPA, is working to identify companies liable for the mines. In 2013, EPA signed a legal agreement called an Administrative Order on Consent (AOC) with El Paso Natural Gas (EPNG) to investigate 19 mine claims for which EPNG is liable. Mine related investigations will continue until enough information is gathered to develop a clean-up plan that will address health risks associated with EPNG mine sites. In addition to overseeing work being conducted by EPNG, EPA continues to pursue other responsible companies and will notify the community of new developments as they occur.
A factsheet giving more information about AUMs in the Cameron area, Cameron area drinking water, and health concerns can be accessed by clicking "documents".
