On March 1, 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality began investigating a report of fuel spilled in a pond of Fanno Creek, in Portland, Oregon.

After deploying sorbents and hard boom, the source of the spilled fuel was traced up the storm sewer system to condominiums near the intersection of Scholls Ferry Road and SW Nicol Road. The fuel was determined to most likely be emanating from leaking underground heating oil tanks at the condominiums. Three tanks were eventually removed, along with accessible petroleum contaminated soil.
