On January 6th, 2003, a student arrived at school with a vial of mercury. He shared the mercury with friends on the school bus, in the gym and in the locker room. Once the teachers recognized the situation they segregated the students who had come in contact with the mercury and began evacuation of the rest of the school. The fire department arrived and began decontaminating the contaminated students. Nevada Department of Environmental Protection requested assistance from EPA to assess the school and provide technical direction to the cleanup contractor.
