On September 7, 2004, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality received a report of a threatened discharge of oil (diesel fuel and motor oil) from a vessel (WN8294T) grounded on a sand bar, Willamette River, approximately river mile 56, Oregon. The report from the Oregon Division of State Lands includes the vessel grounding occurred approximately one month ago.
The vessel contains two 80 gallons diesel tanks, multiple portable fuel tanks, and engine motor oil. The grounded vessel condition is deteriorating and now constitutes a threat of a release of oil to the waters of the United States. A small continuing release is now occuring that is causing a sheen on the river. Potential for release of about 200 gallons of oil is present. Removal of the oil is planned for Saturday, 9/18/04.
