Current Activities
• Air monitoring continues to be conducted during site activities.  
• ERRS and START continue gathering chemical containers approximately five gallons and less.  A total of 136 small containers have been identified as containing unknown contents.  Hazard categorization (HAZCAT) is being performed on the containers unknown contents.  
• Six composite liquid samples were collected for disposal purposes on March 3.  The samples were analyzed for total cyanide, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, selenium, silver and zinc.  The results of samples were compared to the United States Environmental Agency (US EPA) maximum concentrations for toxicity characteristics established in 40 CFR 261.24, characteristics of corrosivity established in CFR 261.22, and screened for total cyanide.   The liquid samples were analyzed by Microbac Laboratories, Incorporated located in Collinsville, IL.
• Sample MPPW-1 was collected from vats and a pit located in the Wheel Room.  MPPW-1 indicated high in silver at 15.6 milligrams per Liter (mg/L) above the US EPA criteria level of 5.0 mg/L.  
•Sample MPFW-2 was collected from vats located in the Wheel Room.  Sample MPFW-2 exhibited characteristics of corrosivity with a pH of 2.2 and exceeded the US EPA limit of 5.0 mg/L for chromium with a result of 19.5 mg/L.  
• Sample MPFW-3composite sample collected from vats located in the wheel room.  Sample MPFW-3 exhibited characteristics of corrosivity with a pH of 0.36 and exceeded the US EPA limit of 5.0 mg/L for chromium with a result of 7.80 mg/L.  
• Sample MPFW-4 was collected from two vats, a tote and a drum known to contain chromic acid.  Sample MPCA-4 exhibited characteristics of corrosivity with a pH of < 3 and exceeded the US EPA limit of 5.0 mg/L for chromium with result of 63,200 mg/L.
• Sample MPRW-5 was collected from tanks TK-042, TK-043, TK-044, TK-049, TK-051, TK-052 and TK-053.  The tanks consisted of rainwater that was pumped from pits located within the wastewater treatment building and the wastewater transfer area.  MPRW-5 sample results indicated the rainwater to be non-hazardous liquid waste.  
• MPRW-6 was collected from tanks containing wastewater.  The tanks were identified as TK-045 (sand filter tank), TK-046, TK-047, TK-50, TK-66 (clarifier) and TK-072 (clarifier).  MPRW-6 sample results indicated the wastewater to be non-hazardous liquid waste.  
• Totes, drums and other containers containing liquids, solids and sludge continue to be staged according to chemical compatibility.  There were 36 vats that contained liquid/sludge, 83 above ground storage tanks containing liquid/sludge, five pit areas containing liquid and 189 drums containing liquid/sludge/solids located on site.
• The field HAZCAT operation of the onsite containers is ongoing.
• ERRS continue the removing process of piping from the former plating lines.  Once removed, the pipes are decontaminated and placed into a roll-off for future disposal.    In addition, empty drums are decontaminated and placed into the roll-off.  Approximately 18.3 tons of non-hazardous debris has been disposed of thus far. The non-hazardous debris is disposed at the Laubscher Meadows Landfill in Evansville, IN.  
• Portions of the piping that still contained product are placed in container labeled and staged with according to its chemical compatibility.  There have been a couple of instances where liquid acid inadvertently spilled onto the floor during disassembling piping and had to be neutralized with soda ash.
• Approximately 38,428 gallons of non-hazardous liquid waste has been taken off site by Waste Management.  The non-hazardous waste liquid was taken to the Outerloop Landfill located in Louisville, KY. for solidification.
• Approximately 2 tons of scrap metal has been taken off site by a local recycler, Fligeltaub of Evansville, IN.  
• Approximately 15.27 tons of non-hazardous debris has been hauled off site thus far.  


Planned Removal Actions
• Complete the sampling and analysis of the tanks, drums, and smaller containers.
• Based on the HAZCAT results, the containers will be grouped and staged for disposal.
• Compatible waste streams will be bulked, re-containerized, and appropriately prepared for disposal at off-site disposal facilities.
• Continue emptying tanks, piping, debris, drums and other containers will be cleaned as necessary, cut to size and disposed of at off-site disposal facilities.
• Continue to clean floors, walls, ceilings, building components and building contents and/or dispose of items as reasonably possible to remove contamination from spills and contaminated dust or other materials to prevent contaminant migration or cross contamination of cleaned areas.
• Continue to disassemble the dilapidated portion of the waste water treatment building.
• Characterize soil from a historic spill which occurred outside the bulk wastewater treatment storage building on the east side of the property. Once characterized, dispose of roll-off containing the soil off-site.
• Characterize, remove and property dispose of hazardous substance and wastes located at the Site in accordance with U.S. EPA's Off-Site Rule (40 CFR 300.440).
