U.S. EPA OSC Steve Faryan or his designee and/or Weston Solutions Inc. (WSI) START Member provide oversight, while PRP contractors remediate the surficial silty clay till with Electrical Resistive Heating (ERH) technology and the mass waste sand and gravel with Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) technology in Area 1 and 2. OSC or designee and/or START also provide oversight during the confirmation sampling of the surficial silty clay till. SVE System (mass waste sand and gravel) ■ All of Area 1 and 2 SVE system has been operating since 10 June 2003 ■ All SVE above ground piping has been winterized.
ERH System (surficial silty clay till)
■ All of Area 2 and subarea 1H, 1G, 1E, 1F and portions of 1D in Area 1 are being treated with ERH technology. ■ Average soil temperature for Area 1 is 79 degrees C and Area 2 is 90 degrees C. ■ All ERH above ground piping has been winterized.
Sampling and Air Monitoring ■ The hydrocarbon analyzer continues to operate. Air monitoring is being conducted from five different ports (ERH inlet, SVE/ERH inlet, Intermediate/ after first vapor carbon, stack/effluent and inside Lockformer plant). ■ Outside perimeter and residential ambient air monitoring and sampling are being conducted using a PID and Summa canister. Outside perimeter and residential data have been below EPA action levels. ■ Confirmation sampling has been conducted in Area 2 and Subarea 1G and 1H. Subarea 2A is no longer being heated, all sample results were below RAOs. Subarea 2B, 2C and 2D sample data had some RAO exceedances. These subareas continue to get treatment (heating) and additional confirmation samples were collected on the 26 and 27 February 2004 and 1 March 2004.
■ PRP will continue remediating the surficial silty clay till and fill in Area 1 and 2 with Electrical Resistive Heating (ERH) technology. PRP will also continue to add more subareas in Area 1.
■ PRP will continue remediating the mass waste sand and gravel in Area 1 and 2 with SVE technology.
■ Continue remediating the surficial silty clay till and fill in Area 1 and 2 with Electrical Resistive Heating (ERH) technology and the mass waste sand and gravel in Area 1 and 2 with SVE technology.
■ Dependent on the confirmation results in the surficial silty clay till and fill in area 2, area 2 will be taken off line and subarea 1D, 1A (under building), 1B (under building), 1C (under building) and D1 (former degreaser area) will be heated.
