Between April and May 2009 the following removal work was performed:
Pine Court - Beach Collection
CMS restarted beach collection of leachate at Pine Court by use of an above ground line that runs from the Pine Court lift station to the Patton house. Tanker trucks then transport the leachate to the on site treatment building before final disposal.
Pine Court - Targeted Leachate Collection (TLC)
CMS has upgraded the TLC system with an additional two extraction wells, which will collect high-pH leachate perched on the marker shale at Seep 2.
West CKD
The excavation of CKD beach side of the West CKD collection system is completed. In addition, the rebuild of the collection system is complete, though start up problems with silting continue to be addressed.
Effectiveness Monitoring
CMS and EPA personnel found no pH exceedances at West CKD or East Park. A 40-foot area of the Seep 1 barrier wall was found to have a pH above 11. At Pine Court, pH continued to remain above 9, which necessitated the work detailed above.
During the week of May 4, EPA meet with the following stakeholders Tip of the Mitt, Friends of the Jordon, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Health Deportment of Northwest Michigan, Bay Harbor, City of Petoskey, Three Lakes Association, and Walloon Lake Association.
EPA Public Affairs is working with stakeholders on a funding request to establish a regional stakeholder group.
*Costs - a new TDD was established for removal work, which totals $100,000. The previous removal TDD, which has been expended, was for $400,000. In addition, a remedial TDD has been established under the Remedial Project Manager.
