The DSC-Trenton Site (aka Detroit Steel Co formerly McLouth Steel) is a former steel production facility located at 1491 West Jefferson Avenue, Trenton, Michigan.
During the week of May 11, 2009, U.S. EPA completed a hazard analysis of each transformer area and the capacitor mezzanine. The hazard analysis included confirming each transformer’s location, serial number, capacity (in gallons), drainpipe diameter, and the appropriate size of the exclusion and contamination reduction zones around each transformer.
During the week of May 18, U.S. EPA completed the sampling of 45 transformers. The total estimated volume of PCB oils in the transformers is 26,000 gallons.
U.S. EPA intends to remobilize to the site on June 8, 2009 to begin draining transformers. Mobilization may be delayed depending on sample results and costing.
Issues:
According to DSC President Mr. Michael Wilkinson, DSC is near insolvency and the current backers are refusing to provide additional operating funds. On May 15, employees were laid off, security was discontinued, and notice was given that DTE will shut-off electricity in two weeks. In addition, Wayne County and the City Trenton are pursuing collection of unpaid property tax. U.S. EPA will work with government entities and provide information as requested.

3) Segregate oils,
4) Arrange for disposal of transformer oils,
5) Plan for removal of capacitors,
6) Public Affairs to develop community involvement plan.
