Current Activities
• Air monitoring continues to be conducted during site activities.  There are two Area RAEs and two Multi RAEs with hydrogen cyanide sensors installed and located in the work area.
• On April 2, 2009 three composite samples, MPCN-1, MPCN-2 and MPCN-3, were collected.  The samples were collected from drums, totes and tanks that were known to contain cyanide liquids.  In general, the cyanide liquids were composited into three different samples according to their color.  Sample MPCN-1 was a clear yellow liquid; MPCN-2 was a clear blue/green liquid; MPCN-3 was a dark amber liquid.  The samples were analyzed for total cyanide, reactive cyanide, Amenable cyanide, Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) eight metals and corrosivity.  The liquid samples were analyzed by Microbac Laboratories, Incorporated located in Collinsville, IL.
• The results of samples MPCN-1, MPCN-2 and MPCN-3 were compared to the United States Environmental Agency (US EPA) maximum concentrations for toxicity characteristics established in 40 CFR 261.24, characteristics of corrosivity established in 40 CFR 261.22, and characteristics of reactivity established in 40 CFR 261.23.
• Sample MPCN-1 liquid sample contained high levels of reactive cyanide at 25,300 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and exceeded the regulatory limit for toxicity of 5 mg/L for silver with a result of 91 mg/L and obtained a pH of 12.3.  There is approximately 19,368 gallons of liquid estimated for sample MPCN-1.
• Sample MPCN-2 liquid sample contained high levels of reactive cyanide at 20,800 mg/L, exceeded the regulatory limit for toxicity of 5 mg/L for chromium with a result of 6.66 mg/L and exhibited characteristics of corrosivity with a pH of 13.2.  There is approximately 13,945 gallons of liquid estimated for sample MPCN-2.
• Sample MPCN-3 liquid sample contained high levels of reactive cyanide at 74,400 mg/L, equaled the regulatory limit for toxicity of 5 mg/L for chromium, exceeded the regulatory limit for toxicity of 5 mg/L for lead with a result of 24.7 mg/L and exhibited characteristics of corrosivity with a pH of 13.7. There is approximately 1,100 gallons of liquid estimated for sample MPCN-3.
• Disposal of the liquids composited into samples MPCN-1, MPCN-2 and MPCN-3 are pending.
• April 12 through April 23, 2009 approximately 48,815 gallons of Chromic Acid solution (waste codes D002, D007) was collected by vacuum trucks and taken off site for disposal.  A total of 45,115 gallons was transported to Envirite of Illinois for disposal located in Harvey, Illinois.  A total of 3,700 gallons was transported to Vickery Environmental, Inc. 3956 St. Rt. 412  Vickery, OH.
• April 29 thru May 15, 2009 approximately 9,475 gallons of liquid containing Silver (D011) was vacuum trucks and transported to Vickery Environmental, Inc. 3956 St. Rt. 412  Vickery, OH.
• ERRS continue the removal process of piping from the former plating lines.  Once removed, the pipes are decontaminated and placed into a roll-off box for off-site disposal.    In addition, empty drums are decontaminated and placed into the roll-off.  Approximately 74.53 tons of non-hazardous debris has been disposed of thus far. The non-hazardous debris is disposed at the Laubscher Meadows Landfill in Evansville, IN.
• Approximately 72,597 gallons of non-hazardous liquid waste has been taken off site by Waste Management.  The non-hazardous waste liquid was taken to the Outerloop Landfill located in Louisville, KY, for solidification.
• Approximately 5.16 tons of scrap metal has been taken off site by a local recycler, Fligeltaub of Evansville, IN.

Planned Removal Actions
• Compatible waste streams will be bulked, re-containerized, and appropriately prepared for disposal at off-site disposal facilities.
• Continue emptying tanks, piping, debris, drums and other containers will be cleaned as necessary, cut to size and disposed of at off-site disposal facilities.
• Continue to clean floors, walls, ceilings, building components and building contents and/or dispose of items as reasonably possible to remove contamination from spills and contaminated dust or other materials to prevent contaminant migration or cross contamination of cleaned areas.
• Continue to disassemble the dilapidated portion of the waste water treatment building.
• Characterize soil from a historic spill which occurred outside the bulk wastewater treatment storage building on the east side of the property. Once characterized, dispose of roll-off containing the soil off-site.
• Characterize, remove and properly dispose of hazardous substance and wastes located at the Site in accordance with U.S. EPA's Off-Site Rule (40 CFR 300.440).
• Lab-pack laboratory and house hold hazardous waste chemicals for off-site disposal
• Solidification of sludge’s found in tanks, drums, totes and other containers found through-out the facility

Key Issues
• Safe work practices when working with cyanide waste in unknown conditions
• Continue determining of exact quantities of waste liquids remaining on site for off-site disposal
