Emergency - Removal Action Pollution Report (POLREP) #1
Start Date: 8/1/2009
Site Description
During the end of July, Reg 4 ERRB in conjunction with NC DNR, coordinated a sampling event of several potentially contaminated water wells around the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Two wells along Robinwood Drive showed elevated levels of PCE (tetrachloroethylene) 8.5 and 40 ug/l. OSC Gaughan contacted the two residents and one resident had previously installed a carbon filtration system to remove known contaminants. The other resident at 5005 Robinwood Drive indicated that they would also like a filtration system. The closest municipal water supply is approximately one mile from the area.

Current Activities
Based on the analytical results received from SESD Athens, the OSC consulted with EPA Technical Services' Glenn Adams. The well at 5005 (which is slightly downgradient and within 100 yards of the well at 5101) was found to be 8.5 ug/l PCE (tetrachloroethylene), but historically was showing an increasing trend. It was tested to be 5.0 ug/l in 2005 and 6.5 ug/l in 2006 according to data from NC DNR.

EPA's Adams agreed that the resident with a history of increasing PCE results should also be addressed. The OSC elected to activate CERCLA emergency funding and ERRs arranged for this resident to have a carbon filtration system installed at their home. The residential filtration system at 5005 Robinwood Drive was installed on August 25th.

Planned Removal Actions
Sampling of additional homes along Robinwood Drive will be conducted during the week of September 10th. Analytical results of the remaining homes along Robinwood Drive are anticipated on September 24th.
