Current Activities
Air surveillance is continuing with the collection of high volume air samples for total radium and gross alpha/beta activity. Air samples are counted on-site using an alpha/beta wipe counter. Radon sampling on the perimeter using both real-time instruments and long-term samples commenced.  Long term radon samples will be submitted to a laboratory for analysis.

PST and START has initiated the segregation assessment of the north yard.  The assessment consists of the segregation of items demonstrating gamma radiation emissions from those items  with no gamma emissions.  The START began to assess non-gamma radiation items for alpha radiation contamination using a combination of real-time monitoring  and wipe sampling.  Items determined to be below contamination levels listed in NUREG 1.86 (100 dpm/100 cm2 fixed and 20 dpm/100 cm2 removable) will be released to the business owner or sent to a solid waste landfill for disposal in accordance with written site protocols.

The Action Memorandum was approved by the Region 9 Regional Administrator and has been forwared to Headquarters for review and approval.

Key Issues
1.  OSC Wise submitted at letter to CADHS requesting concurrance on the use of NUREG 1.86 contamination action levels for the release of items from the site on July 30, 2004.  In this letter, CADHS was provided 48 hours within the reciept of the letter to concur or object to the use if these action levels.  As of August 6, 2004, CADHS has not commented on the use of the NUREG 1.86 action levels.
2.  Approval of Action Memo with statutory exemption from Headquarters.
3.  Approval to discharge to the POTW from the City of Los Angeles.
4.  City of Los Angeles Local Enforcement Agency has prohibited the disposal of any solid waste from the site within the city limits.
5.  Demobilization of ERRS due to insufficient funding on July 30, 2004.  ERRS will remobilize after the Action Memo is fully funded.
