The Wells G & H Superfund Site covers approximately 330 acres in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The Site includes the aquifer and land area located within the zone of contribution to the City of Woburn’s two municipal drinking water wells known as Wells G & H. The Olympia Property is one of the five primary source areas of contamination within the Federal Superfund Site.
At a former drum disposal area at the Site, PCB-contaminated surface soils posed a direct contact threat and TCE-contaminated subsurface soils are acting as a continuing source of ground water contamination. See previous polreps for additional background information.
The Olympia Nominee Trust (Olympia) has been identified as a potentially responsible party (PRP) as the owner of the site. Olympia is performing the removal action under an Administrative Order on Consent (AOC) issued by EPA. Removal activities completed by Olympia during previous reporting periods include excavation and off-site disposal of the PCB-contaminated surface soils, sampling activities to further characterize the Site, and initiation of cleanup activities relative to the TCE-contaminated subsurface soils.
During this reporting period, Olympia has continued to conduct field activities for the TCE cleanup via in situ permanganate injection treatment. Olympia has removed trees and cleared vegetation from the project area and obtained a permit from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority to conduct work within a sewer easement area. Olympia has also secured a sheet piling subcontractor to install a sheet piling containment wall around the in situ treatment area.
Planned removal activities include:
1) Improvements to the access road;
2) driving of sheet piling around the treatment area;
3) drilling of additional monitoring wells;
4) installation of injection wells, trenches, and a permanganate delivery system;
5) operation of the in situ treatment system; and
6) monitoring to ensure compliance with cleanup standards established in the Record of Decision (ROD).
Olympia will make necessary improvements to the Site access road and mobilize its sheet piling subcontractor to install the sheet piling containment wall around the containment area.
