1. Current Situation
U.S. EPA contractors continue to inventory, stage, sample and haz-cat drums and vats. Drums continue to be separated into waste streams and consolidated. Composite samples from waste streams have been collected and submitted for analyses to prepare profiles for disposal. A broken natural gas line stopped work until repairs could be made. Air monitoring continued within the hot zones. Empty drums were triple rinsed and staged for disposal. No detectable concentrations of volatile organic carbons (VOCs) have been recorded outside of the hot zones. To date, 2317 drums have been inventoried and 2317 drums have been sampled and 1653 have undergone hazardous categorization.
2. Removal Activities to Date
During the week of January 24 to 29, 2005, ERRS and START continued inventorying and sampling of drums in both the Warehouse and Manufacturing Buildings. ERRS continued staging, haz-catting and consolidating drums of material for disposal. A total of 164 drums were sampled and 163 drums were bulked and consolidated for disposal. A natural gas pipe was broken in the warehouse building. Work was halted until repairs could be made.
During the week of January 31 to February 5, 2005, ERRS and START continued inventorying and sampling of drums in both the Warehouse and Manufacturing Buildings. ERRS continued staging, haz-catting and consolidating drums of material for disposal. A wash station was set up for the triple rinsing of empty drums. A total of 385 drums were sampled, 80 drums were bulked for disposal and 202 drums were rinsed and staged for disposal.
On February 5, 2005, a fire was extinguished at a facility located approximately 100 yards south of the Site by the Detroit and Hamtramck Fire Departments. The fire did not pose any danger to the site at any time.
• Inventory, stage, sample, hazcat and dispose of all 55-gallon drums and small containers. • Sample, drain, rinse and render unusable all AST's, tanks, vats, totes and process vessels. • Rinse and dispose of all empty drums. • Transport all wastes off site to a CERCLA compliant facility.
• Continue to rinse and dispose of all empty drums. • Prepare site for staging and sampling of drums. • Consolidate all small containers. • Lab pack all materials from laboratory.
• Amend Action Memo to define the Michigan Industrial Finishes Site as including the non-adjacent empty lot used by MIF to store drums and to include the sampling and excavation of any contaminated soils due to evidence of historical spills/leakage.
