All radium containing materials have been removed from the site for disposal. The structure at 10800 Burbank Blvd. is empty and has been decontaminated. The structure at 5543 Riverton Ave. is in the process of being decontaminated. A post-decontamination structural assessment of the inside of 10800 Burbank Blvd. has indicated that residual radioactive contamination in excess of Atomic Energy Commission Regulatory Guide 1.86 (RG 1.86) exists. Based on the assessment data and ineffectiveness of decontamination the building will be demolished. March 5 - March 18, 2005: -1 OSC, 2 PST, 3 START, 16 ERRS; ERRS segregated and containerized radium containing materials (RCM) and surface contaminated objects (SCO) from the west warehouse at 10800 Burbank Blvd. ERRS removed hazardous substances from gauges. Hazardous substances included chlorinated and non-chlorinated solvents and mercury. Approximately 80-120 cubic yards of SCO were shipped off-site daily. On March 11, 2005 and April 1, 2005, the remaining RCM was shipped off-site for disposal. ERRS demolished the offices in both sides of the structure. Demolition debris was disposed of as SCO. March 21 - April 8, 2005: -1 OSC, 3 START, 1 PST, 6-10 ERRS; ERRS decontaminated the structure at 10800 Burbank Blvd. by vacuuming loose dust and dirt and pressure washing the insterior. Decontamination water was containerized for off-site disposal. The START and PST conducted preliminary structural assessment for residual radioactive contamination at 10800 Burbank Blvd. Data indicates contamination in excess of RG 1.86. The START is collecting additional data to confirm the preliminary survey and planning a MARSSIM survey of 5543 Riverton Ave.
1. Demolition of 10800 Burbank Blvd. 2. MARSSIM Survey of 5543 Riverton Ave. 3. Assessment of soil contamination upon completion of demolition activities.
