Current Activities
1. Current Situation

U.S. EPA contractors continue to inventory, stage, sample and haz-cat drums.  Small containers continue to be consolidated for disposal and drums and totes continue to be drained and rinsed for disposal.  Vats and aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) and associated piping are being inspected and drained of all materials.  This reporting period, a total of 352 drums and 4,650 gallons of waste paint and flammable liquids were sent off site for disposal at Petro-Chem Processing, Inc.   In addition, 60 cubic yards of PPE and Hazardous Waste Solid were shipped off site for disposal at Wayne Disposal Site#2 Landfill in Belleville, Michigan.

U.S. EPA and START collected soil samples at 5 separate locations.  Two samples were collected at each location  from approximately 0' -1' below ground surface, and from approximately 1'-2' below ground surface.  The ten soil samples will be analyzed for Total Metals, Volatile Organic Compounds, and Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds.

Progress to date:
Drums inventoried - 3439
Drums sampled - 3235
Drums hazcatted - 3155
Small container collection/lab-packed - 5333
Vats/Totes/Tanks inventoried/sampled - 27
Vats/Totes/Tanks hazcatted - 24

2. Removal Activities to Date

During the period of March 28 to April 8, 2005, EPA, ERRS and START continued inventorying and sampling of drums in both the Warehouse and Manufacturing Buildings.  ERRS continued staging, haz-catting and consolidating drums of material for disposal.  Piping in the site buildings was drained of material.  Small containers were staged for disposal.  Powders were staged for disposal.  Empty drums, totes and vats were rinsed in preparation for disposal.  Water lines were repaired and valves from the processing vessels were removed.   Two  ASTs and four ball mill tumblers were drained generating 60 drums of material.  A total of 352 drums and 4,650 gallons of flammable paint related wastes were transported to Petro-Chem Processing for disposal.   A total of 265 empty drums were sent to Maxi Container for recycling.  A total of 60 cubic yards of PPE and debris were sent to Wayne Disposal Site #2 Landfill for disposal.

Planned Removal Actions
• Inventory, stage, sample, hazcat and dispose of all 55-gallon drums and small containers.
• Sample, drain, rinse and render unusable all AST's, tanks, vats, totes and process vessels.
• Rinse and dispose of all empty drums.
• Excavate contaminated soils.
• Transport all wastes off site to a CERCLA compliant facility.

Next Steps
• Continue to rinse and dispose of all empty drums.
• Continue sampling and profiling of consolidated drums.
• Consolidate all small containers.
• Lab pack all materials from laboratory.
• Evaluate soil sample analytical data collected from suspected impacted areas.
