Pollution Report (POLREP) #6
Site Description
See Initial POLREP dated 12/8/2004.

Current Activities
From April 23, 2005, through May 19, 2005, the Emergency Rapid Response Service (ERRS) contractor continued with the excavation of lead-contaminated areas at the site.  Large quantities of battery casings and contaminated soil were found on the eastern edge of the site where the fire started.  This contamination extended approximately thirty feet into the adjoining property.  Approximately 95% of the site has been excavated.  An X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) unit was used to confirm the limits of excavation.  The Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) continues to collect samples to be analyzed by the lab to support the XRF readings.  On-site treatment of the excavated soils also occurred during this reporting period.  Samples of the treated soil were taken and analyzed to verify that the soil met the appropriate treatment standards.  On May 3, 2005, soil treatment operations using the pugmill were discontinued.  ERRS continues to treat soil and debris which was too large to be processed through the pugmill with an excavator.  Treated soil were sent to a CERCLA compliant landfill.

Planned Removal Actions
Continue excavating remaining contaminated soils and on-site treatment using an excavator.  Treated soils will be disposed off-site at an appropriate landfill.

Next Steps
Backfill and hydroseed excavated area once excavation and treatment activities are complete.

Key Issues
More funding will likely be required due to the underestimation of material needing to be excavated, the additional time to prepare the heavily wooded site for excavation activities, and the large amount of debris found in th excavated material which couldn't be processed through the pugmill.
