The structure at 10800 Burbank Blvd. (north building) has been demolished. This was based on a post-decontamination structural assessment of the inside that structure that determined the decontamination procedure was ineffective. The structure at 5543 Riverton Ave. (south building) had the concrete floor scabbled and pressure washed.
Photographs (Web Site Only after 5/2/05): Demolition of the north building.
April 11 - April 15, 2005: 1 OSC, 1 PST, 2-3 START, 6-10 ERRS;
ERRS continued to scabble the south building floor and prepared north building for demolition. ERRS also began spray painting the interior of the north building (walls and ceiling) to seal any residual contaminants.
April 18 - April 20, 2005: 1 OSC, 2-3 START, 1 PST, 6-10 ERRS; ERRS continued to scabble the south building floor and completed painting the interior of the north building. LADWP disconnected the power connections to the north building and installed a hydrant water meter for water truck fills. Fact Sheet #8, outlining the demolition activities, was distributed to the nearby residents and businesses. ERRS demolished the north building and began removing the slab foundation. Ample water spray was used to knock down fugitive dust. START strategically placed 5 high volume air samplers and particulate monitors around the demolition area. Airborne particulate concentrations were checked periodically and air filters were analyzed daily for radioactivity. No concentrations of concern were observed.
April 21 - April 26, 2005: 1 OSC, 2-3 START, 1-0 PST, 6-10 ERRS; ERRS completed scabbling and pressure washing the south building floor. T&D of the north building debris was also completed - 28 end dumps (40 CY) loaded for disposal at U.S. Ecology facility in Beatty, NV. START continued air sampling and particulate monitoring and assessed underground pipes associated with north building, particularly sewer line. No measurable amounts of radiation were detected. ERRS capped all ug pipes and marked them for future reference. ERRS pressure washed wall and foundation of adjacent building and began removing asphalt in yard area between north and south building. PST demobbed April 23.
1. MARSSIM Survey of 5543 Riverton Ave. 2. Assessment of soil contamination upon completion of demolition activities. 3. Decontamination of sidewalk and streets as necessary
ERRS to stand-down while START conducts the following: - Preliminary Characterization Survey (PCS) of south warehouse; - Assessment of western property boundary; - Assessment of sidewalk, grass medium, driveway, and south building porch; - Assessment of soil where north building once stood: and - Conduct MARSSIM Final Status Survey of south building interior.
Submittal of derived concentration guideline levels (DCGLs) for the MARSSIM Final Status Survey Plan to the California Department of Health Services, Radiologic Health Branch for concurrence.
