Pollution Report (POLREP) #43
Site Description
Please refer to PolRep 38 or 39 for details.

Current Activities
During the current reporting period the placement of rip rap along the Mississippi River bank was completed.  The process involved clearing some trees, placement of matting and then the rip rap.  Please see the Images Section for some photos.  Also, 60 loads of asbestos contaminated soils were loaded and disposed of site, and grid numbers 1,2,3,12,13, and 23 were excavated.  Excavation began at grid number 24, and about half of the grid was excavated to a depth of 24 inches.  At the time of this report, these areas are been backfilled and restored.  Please see the Documents Section for an updated map.

Of the 255 samples collected as of 24 September 2005, 1 was overloaded with dust or damaged, thus preventing the analysis of the sample cartridge.  Of the remaining samples that have been analyzed, 32 samples (13%) contained concentrations of asbestos above the project-specific air quality objective with a maximum concentration of 0.008 S/cc.  26 of these samples were collected between 13 June 2005 and 16 June 2005.  During this period the analytical laboratory was using a higher sensitivity and the analytical method detection limit used could not achieve our desired level.  Per our request, the laboratory adjusted its sensitivity to 0.001 S/cc as of 17 June 2005.  Since 17 June 2005, 6 samples were reported above the air quality objective of 0.001 S/cc with a maximum of 0.002 S/cc.  2 of these samples were reported in higher sensitivity resulting from lower volume intake.  4 of these samples were associated with near source sampling.  Laboratory asbestos concentrations in all remaining 222 samples collected and analyzed since 17 June 2005 reported concentrations at or below the air quality objective.

Of the 93 soil samples collected as of 24 September 2005 , 3 had detectable levels of tremolite and chrysotile asbestos <1%, and 0 samples were over the action level of 1%.

Planned Removal Actions
Continue the excavation of asbestos contaminated soils, restoration of the excavated areas, and disposal of site of the asbestos containing materials.

Next Steps
Cutting back the slope will begin next Spring.

Key Issues
The response to the hurricanes on the Gulf area will determine how much longer this work continues.  If our assistance is needed in the Gulf area, the activities here will cease and resume 2006 Spring.
