Current Activities
From November 7 - November 18, 2005, U.S. EPA and its Emergency Rapid Response Services (ERRS) and Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contractors continued actions to reduce releases of hydrogen sulfide from the landfill and eliminate high level exposure to nearby receptors.

Routine actions include on-site and off-site monitoring for hydrogen sulfide and particulate matter, site security, dust control, and general site maintenance.  Specific response actions are detailed below.

SITE ACTIVITIES TO DATE:

- The draining and filling of a pond, located on the south side of the Phase II Summit area, was completed.

- Grading and filling of the area between the Phase II Summit Area and the Phase II Split cells was initiated.

- On Monday, November 14th, the treatment system was tested with leachate impacted pond water.  The system operated with no apparent flaws.  Treatment of the pond water is ongoing.  During this period, the City of Warren POTW has authorized discharge time from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.  On Wednesday, November 16th, the treatment system was tested with leachate pulled directly from a riser for the Phase II Summit area.  Air monitoring along the sewer line for H2S is being performed as the treatment system is operational.

- Perimeter air monitoring was conducted during all site activities.  No readings exceeding the site’s action level were obtained.

Planned Removal Actions
-   Treat 40-60 million gallons of surface and sub-surface leachate.
-  Per the design plans, install a surface water / storm water management system
-  Install a permanent leachate management system.
-  If necessary, design and install a soil vapor extraction and treatment system.

Next Steps
-  Continue implementation of the surface water management system.
-  Continue leachate treatment and discharge.

Key Issues
-  Site security subcontractors were changed due to performance and contractual concerns.
-  On November 16, a few gallons of untreated leachate was accidentally released to the sewer.  Additional treatment chemical was added downstream to neutralize the release.  Air monitoring indicated that the mitigation was successful.
