A. On February 5, 2005, a tractor trailer owned by Logistics International-Georgia was traveling southbound on I-81 through Augusta County, Virginia when the brakes on the truck caught fire. The driver pulled off the road and was able to disconnect the tractor from the trailer; however, the trailer shortly caught fire. The driver contacted 911 and emergency crews responded.
B. EPA assistance with I-81 Tractor Trailer Chemical Spill site was requested on 2/18/05 by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VADEQ).
a. START contractor collected a total of 41 surface water samples, 56 soil and sediment samples and 12 potable groundwater samples. Sample results indicated that there was no increase in hexavalent chromium levels in the unnamed tributary area downstream of the Interstate 81 right-of-way. b. OSC Kelly requested that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registar review the analytical data and the locations that the samples were taken. c. ATSDR reviewed the data and determined that their drinking water was not impacted by the contamination from the Site. d. OSC tasked START to draft letters to residents explaining the the analytical results and ATSDR's findings. OSC reviewed letters and tasked START to mail letters along with analytical results to residents. e. Due to contractual issues, the original ERRS contractor was removed from the Site. OSC tasked the new ERRS contractor, Kemron, to complete work on the Site. f. During the week of October 17 thru October 23, 2005, the ERRS contractor hired a sub-contractor to install a concrete swale in the storm water drainage system along the southbound I-81 to restore the site to original condition. On October 21, 2005, all site removal activities were completed.
a. OSC Kelly will forward final report to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. b. No further field activities are anticipated at the Site.
