From January 3 - January 27, 2006, U.S. EPA and its Emergency Rapid Response Services (ERRS) and Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contractors continued actions to reduce releases of hydrogen sulfide from the landfill and eliminate high level exposure to nearby receptors.
Routine actions include on-site and off-site monitoring for hydrogen sulfide, site security, road grading, and general site maintenance. Specific response actions are detailed below.
SITE ACTIVITIES TO DATE:
- A drainage ditch was created between the brick pond and the main storm water ditch to allow for surface drainage of precipitation from the eastern portion of the Phase II area. - The pond located on the east side of the Phase II split-cells was filled with clay and graded to promote drainage away from the landfill. - Treatment of leachate continues to operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week. - Final grading of work areas (where accessible) was performed in preparation for site demobilization. - Pumping operations from the North Pond ceased on January 20th. Leachate treatment will continue from Phase II (risers 1 & 2). - Crew and equipment began demobilizing from the site the week of January 23, 2006. - Air monitoring along the sewer line for H2S is being performed as the treatment system is operational.
- Treat and discharge sub-surface leachate. - Per the design plans, install a surface water / storm water management system. Remaining activities include final grading and cap vegetation which will be conducted this coming spring. - Install a permanent leachate management system.
- Continue leachate treatment and discharge. - Install security fencing around the water treatment building.
- The only activity occuring in the month of February will be leachate treatment. If freezing tempuratures return and persist, some site grading may occur.
