Site Description

Current Activities
During the reporting period, GLDM completed the initial nine feet of dredging in Pond Area 3, and began dredging in Pond Area 2.  Confirmation sampling completed in Pond Area 3 showed that two of the seven 50’ by 50’ grids passed the site cleanup criteria, three of the seven grids were slightly above the site cleanup criteria, and the two northern grids were significantly above the site cleanup criteria.  MDEQ and USEPA decided to immediately dredge an additional two feet from the two northern grids in Pond Area 3, and revisit the option of redredging the three grids which were slightly above the site cleanup criteria after the dredging and confirmation sampling is done for Pond Area 2.  GLDM is currently redredging in Pond Area 3.

Westshore completed the pre-dredge survey of Areas C and D on 1/26 and 1/27.

The soft wetland sediment in Areas C and D continue to be an obstacle.  On 1/27/06, the sheet pile wall installed to isolate downstream end of Area C began to fail and was reinstalled.  While establishing a system for accessing Area D, J & M Construction began excavating in Area C1.  To date, a total of 1,050 cubic yards of sediment have been removed from Area C1 and the far north end of C2.  EQM is planning to install a turbidity curtain at the upstream end of Area C1 to prevent material mobilized by upstream excavation from recontaminating the area.The amphibious excavator was able to operate in the floodplain at Areas C and D, but the amphibious dump trucks were not.  The dump trucks could track out into the wetland, but consistently became stuck when trying to return to solid ground.  EQM proposed using floating HDPE mats to construct a floating road which could support mini, 2.5 cubic yard capacity dump trucks.  The amphibious excavator will be used to load the mini dump trucks.  MDEQ and USEPA agreed to the new method.  The mats began arriving on site on 2/8/06, and J & M Construction is currently constructing the road out to Area D.

To date approximately 58,045 cubic yards of sediment have been removed from Ruddiman Pond and Creek.  As of 2/9/06 the total solidified sediment disposed of is approximately 94,000 tons and approximately 2,720,000 gallons of water have been treated and disposed.


Planned Removal Actions
GLDM will complete redredging activities in Pond Area 3 and return to dredging in Pond Area 2.  J&M Construction will resume dredging in Creek segments C & D upon completion of the floating mat road and arrival of the mini dump trucks.  The mini dump trucks are expected to arrive on 2/13/06.

Next Steps
Complete dredging activities in Ruddiman Pond  Area A2 followed by confirmatory sampling then determine what redredging should take place.  Complete dredging in creek Areas C & D.  The floating HDPE mats will then be reinstalled to provide access to Area B.
