From January 30 - March 17, 2006, U.S. EPA and its Emergency Rapid Response Services (ERRS) and Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contractors continued actions to reduce releases of hydrogen sulfide from the landfill and eliminate high level exposure to nearby receptors.
Routine actions include on-site and off-site monitoring for hydrogen sulfide, site security, road grading, and general site maintenance. Specific response actions are detailed below.
The site has been demobilized until late Spring. The leachate treatment system will be operated 1-2 times per week.
SITE ACTIVITIES TO DATE:
- Treatment of leachate continued to operate 12 to 16 hours per day, seven days per week, until March 17, 2006. Approximately 12.8 million gallons of leachate has been treated to date. - Permanent pumps were installed at all three western risers of the Phase II portion of the landfill. - Crew and equipment demobilized from the site during the week of March 13, 2006. - Air monitoring along the sewer line for H2S is being performed as the treatment system is operational.
- Treat and discharge sub-surface leachate. - Per the design plans, install a surface water / storm water management system. Remaining activities include final grading and cap vegetation which will be conducted later this spring.
- Re-mobilize in late spring, 2006 to vegetate the cap and conduct final site grading. - Operate the leachate treatment system weekly.
- A community meeting is planned and will likely be conducted in May, 2006.
