During the current reporting period, personnel and equipment were mobilized to site, and removal work began. Vegetation was removed from the slope to ensure a safe operation, and excavation of asbestos impacted soils began on July 13, 2006. Excavated soils are been stockpiled on site for later off site disposal. Continuos air monitoring is in place, as well as dust control measures. See Images Section for updated site photos.
Of the 309 samples collected as of 22 July 2006, 1 was overloaded with dust or damaged, thus preventing the analysis of the sample cartridge. Of the remaining samples that have been analyzed, 33 samples (10%) contained concentrations of asbestos above the project-specific air quality objective with a maximum concentration of 0.008 S/cc. 26 of these samples were collected between 13 June 2005 and 16 June 2005. During this period the analytical laboratory was using a higher sensitivity and the analytical method detection limit used could not achieve our desired level. Per our requirement, the laboratory adjusted its sensitivity to 0.001 S/cc as of 17 June 2005. Since 17 June 2005, 8 samples were reported above the air quality objective of 0.001 S/cc with a maximum of 0.003 S/cc. 2 of these samples were reported using a higher sensitivity resulting from lower volume intake. 5 of these samples were associated with near source sampling and 1 was associated with tree removal. Laboratory asbestos concentrations in all remaining 284 samples collected and analyzed since 17 June 2005 reported concentrations at or below the air quality objective.
Of the 159 soil samples collected as of 22 July 2006, 18 had detectable levels of tremolite and chrysotile asbestos <1%, and 2 samples were reported above the action level as 1-2%. Analytical results have not been received for the 28 soil samples collected during 2006.
Continue the excavation of asbestos impacted soils, off site disposal of excavated soils, and backfill and restoration of excavated areas. It is expected this will continue through the Summer months.
Continue with the planned removal actions. Upon completion, re open the Park to the public.
