See POLREPs 1 and 2 for site description.
Between August 2, 2007, and August 12, 2007, U.S. EPA initiated and completed the excavation of Areas 1 and 2 to remove direct contact threats. Approximately 1,000 yards were removed. Area 1 was backfilled with clean soil. In Area 2 geotextile and rip-rap were installed.
At the request of Western U.P. District Health Department, U.S. EPA took water samples in the swimming area. Based on these results, the Health Department lifted the advisory closing the beach.
Water and confirmation sample results can be found under "documents" at www.epaosc.net/lakelinden
1) Arrange for disposal of contaminated soil, 2) reseed and restore excavated areas, 3) share site information with Remedial Branch for potential follow-up.
U.S. EPA's emergency response addressed the direct contact threat. Additional investigations may be needed to determine if lead continues under the stamp sand's cover as well as below Torch Lake sediments.
