From approximately 1952 to 1977, the A.C. Lawrence Tannery facility, formerly located on the west bank of the Little Androscoggin River, used a metal trough to transport their waste to settling lagoons on the southeast bank of the Little Androscoggin River.
The land surrounding the Site is primarily wooded. A residential development is planned immediately south of the Site and currently the nearest residences are approximately 2000 feet northeast along Oxford Street. The land use on the west side of the river is industrial/commercial. The Site is located over a mapped sand and gravel aquifer.
This inactive seven acre Site is referred to as lot 7 on the Town of Paris, Maine Property Map R2. The cause of the contamination is from a non-oil manufacturing source (tannery).
Week of 27 August 2007
OSC McKeown, Site Leader (SL) Burton, Response Manager (RM) Lutsic, and 2 equipment operators mobilized. Activities for the week included final grading of the Site with clean fill, followed by the placement of a three inch layer of Class A compost obtained from from Little River, Lisbon Falls ME with the dozer. Other activities included placing surplus boulders along the load-out road, demobilization of sampling supplies, disconnection of phone lines, demobilization of the fax copier machine, and the demobilization of the John Deere 330 excavator on 30 of August 2007. The crew demobilized on 31 August 2007 for the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Week of 3 September 2007
OSC McKeown, RM Lutsic, and 2 equipment operators mobilized. Activities for the week included the continued receipt and spreading of compost, the hand spreading of a mix of upland native forage cover mix seed and sterile rye seed. After the seeds were spread, the dozer was used to mix the seeds into the compost and it was sprayed with water from the water truck. Through consultation with the EPA Environmental Response Team, OSC McKeown chose the sterile (annual) rye because it will prevent erosion, it is a fast bloomer and does not require any maintenance. Additionally, OSC McKeown chose the upland cover mixture of perennial grasses and flowers. Since they are native, they will not introduce any invasive species to the Site other than what is already growing along the road and in the woods.
Demobilization continued as the John Deere 270 excavator, and the end dump were taken off rent on 4 September 2007, electrical power to the trailer was shut off on 5, September 2007, and the storage box was collected by William Scotsman on 6 September 2007.
Site visitors during the week included Wayne Paradis of MEDEP, the Town Manager Sharon Jackson, Department of Public Works Frank Danforth and a newspaper reporter. Wayne Paradis discussed the Lagoon cross sectional maps that he had prepared, and OSC McKeown updated him on the Site status.
On 7 September 2007, STI commenced surveying the Site; an as-built will be submitted upon completion.
On 7 September 2007, OSC McKeown, RM Lutsic and both operators demobilized from the Site. The excavator, office trailer, dozer, end dump, and water truck will be picked up by their respective companies during the week of 10 September 2007 and are currently not being billed to EPA.
