The Harvard Industries Site (Site) is located at 601 North Albion Street in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. The majority of the Site is located on a 66-acre parcel additional properties formerly owned by Harvard Industries include two parking areas, a building, and an area with a concrete foundation. These properties are located east of the 66-acre parcel across Albion Street.
Several companies have conducted foundry and manufacturing operations on Site since the early 1900s. Operations ceased at the Site in 2002. The majority of the Site operations were conducted on the southeast portion of the Site in the main building. This structure is a large concrete block and steel building that previously contained a laboratory, radiation room, offices, and manufacturing and machining facilities. Several other buildings also exist on Site, including a Quonset® building (north of the main building) that contains numerous containers filled with waste products, and a garage on the northwest portion of the Site, where indications of a potential diesel underground storage tank system off the southwest corner of the building are present. The Kalamazoo River is approximately 450 feet south of the Site. A small city park (McAuliffe Park) that includes a baseball field, playground, and picnic area is located on the northeast portion of the Site and occupies approximately 10 of the 66 acres.
U.S. EPA is currently conducting a Fund-Lead Removal Action at the site. For additional site information see Polrep 1.
On Saturday, September 8, 2007, cleanup activities continued. The cleanup crew competed sampling the waste containers within the Quonset® building. All container sampling logs were completed and handed off to the hazard categorization (hazcat) crew for reference during hazard categorization activities. Crews completed the set up of the hazcat trailer.
On Sunday, September 9, 2007, no Site work occurred.
On Monday, September 10, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew began sweeping the southwest quarter of the site looking for additional waste containers. The crew recovered and staged any manageable waste containers/debris back at the Quonset® building for sampling, hazcating and disposal. All large tanks and waste debris that were located during the sweep were marked on a map and inventoried for further assessment and potential removal. Another crew began hazcatting the previously collected samples from the waste containers within the Quonset® building.
On Tuesday, September 11, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew finished sweeping the southwest quarter of the site. The other crew continued to hazcat the samples that were collected from the waste containers within the Quonset® building.
On Wednesday, September 12, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew began to sweep the northwest quarter of the site. The other crew continued to hazcat the samples that were collected from the waste containers within the Quonset® building. The on-site laboratory was further secured because of potentially unstable chemical containers of Picric Acid and Perchloric Acid present there until removal activities occur in the section of the site.
On Thursday, September 13, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew finished the sweep of the northwest quarter of the site. All collected containers and waste debris was staged at the Quonset® building for later sampling, hazcating and disposal. The other crew continued to hazcat the samples that were collected from the waste containers within the Quonset® building. The hazcat crew has completed the analysis of the samples collected from the totes, tanks, small containers and bags within the Quonset® building. The hazcat crew began hazcating the approximately 250 samples collected from the drums within the Quonset® building.
On Friday, September 14, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew began the sweep of the northeast and southeast quarters of the site. The hazcat crew continued hazcating the drums samples collected from within the Quonset® building.
On Saturday, September 15, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew finished the sweep of the northeast and southeast quarters of the site. All collected containers and waste debris was staged at the Quonset® building for later sampling, hazcating and disposal. The only areas that remain to be swept are the main facility buildings, and the former lab building adjacent to the southeast corner of the main site. The hazcat crew continued hazcating the drums samples collected from within the Quonset® building. The hazcat crew has hazcated approximately 125 of the 250 drum samples.
On Sunday, September 16, 2007, no Site work occurred.
• Continue sweeping the remaining buildings on the property and consolidate all other waste containers to the Quonset® building for sampling, hazcating and disposal.
• Complete all sampling and hazard categorization activities.
• Dispose of all containerized waste and waste identified in pits on site.
• Excavate and dispose of soil/solids from 2 areas of contamination identified on site.
• Lab-Pack chemicals from On-Site Laboratory.
• Finish hazardous waste characterization of collected samples.
• Collect samples from the containers and of the waste debris collected during the sweep of the site.
• Begin dismantling and staging capacitors from the main electrical room.
