During the week ending August 4, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected three water samples (W_SA1N_Infflu_002, W_SA1N_MidA_0002, and W_SA1N_Efflu_0002) from the wastewater treatment system located at staging area 1N, and split one of these samples with START (START-designated sample number APS-073007-WT-01/W_SA1N_Efflu_0002). Arcadis BBL also collected two water samples (K30633 and K30634) from the river and five sediment samples (K55271 through K55275) from Area 6A. Arcadis BBL split one of the Area 6A sediment samples with START (START-designated sample number APS-080107-05-SD/K55271).
Arcadis BBL continued taking turbidity readings from three locations in the Kalamazoo River (one upstream and two downstream of the excavation areas).
Terra Contracting (Terra) continued the construction of staging area 2S and initiated the construction of staging area 5S. Terra also initiated the construction of an access road along the south shore of the river immediately upstream of the Plainwell Dam, as well as an access road for Areas 3B and 4B. Terra continued the excavation of sediments from Area 6A; and initiated the excavation of sediments from Island 3. Terra shipped 37 loads of non-TSCA-level sediment (1,774.74 tons) to the C & C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan.
During the week ending August 11, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected one sediment sample (K55276) from Area 3A2, two sediment samples from Island 3 (K55277 and K55278), one sediment sample from Area 5 (K55279), and one sediment sample from Area 6A (K55280). Arcadis BBL also collected two water samples (K30636 and K30637) from the river, and continued to monitor the turbidity of the water in the river.
Terra began restoring Area 6A by laying burlap, geotech fabric and river run rock in the area; excavated additional sediment from the eastern-most portions of Area 6A; and continued building staging areas 2S and 5S. Terra also deployed silt curtain in Area 2B; continued the grubbing activities along the south shore immediately upstream of the Plainwell Dam; and shipped 27 loads of non-TSCA-level sediment (1,129.63 tons) to the C & C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan.
In addition to the site activities conducted by Arcadis BBL and Terra, Weyerhaeuser contractor RMT, Inc. began grubbing activities at the 12th Street landfill to prepare for its activities related to excavation of sediments in the former power house channel immediately downstream of the Plainwell Dam.
During the week ending August 18, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected one sediment sample (K55281) from Area 6A, three water samples (W_SA1N_Influ_0003, W_SA1N_MidA_ 003, and W_SA1N_Efflu_003) from the wastewater treatment system located at staging area 1N, and two water samples (K30639 and K30640) from the river. Arcadis BBL initiated the construction of the coffer dam immediately upstream of the Plainwell Dam by driving steel sheets into the west shore of the river, and conducted a site tour with the site trustees from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Terra completed the excavation of sediments from Area 6A; began removing the access road to Area 6A; began restoring Area 3A with burlap, geotech fabric, and river run rock; and began restoring Island 3 by laying river run rock along its shoreline. Terra also initiated and completed the excavation of sediments from Area 2B; began grubbing activities in Area 6B; deployed silt curtains for Areas 3B and 4B; initiated the excavation of sediments from Areas 3B and 4B.
During the week ending August 25, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected 21 water samples from the wastewater treatment system located at staging area 1N (W_SA1N_InFlu_0004 through W_SA1N_InFlu_0007, W_SA1N_MidA_0004 through W_SA1N_MidA_0007, W_SA1N_MidB_0001 through W_SA1N_MidB_0004, W_SA1N_EffluA_0004 through W_SA1N_EffluA_0007; W_SA1N_EffluB_0001 through W_SA1N_EffluB_0004, and one duplicate sample named W_SA1N_Dup_0001), and split one of these samples with START (START-designated sample number APS-082307-02-WT/W_SA1N_EffluB_0002). Arcadis BBL collected two water samples from the river (K30643 and K30644) and three sediment samples from Island 3 (K55282 through K55284).
Arcadis BBL continued taking turbidity readings from three locations in the Kalamazoo River (one upstream and two downstream of the excavation areas).
Terra continued restoration of Area 2B; the construction of the coffer dam wall immediately upstream of the Plainwell Dam; the backfilling of Areas 3A1 and 3A2; and the excavation of sediment from Area 3B. Terra initiated the removal of the access road to Area 2B and the placement of river run rock along the river-side perimeter of Island 3. Terra also shipped 27 loads of non-TSCA-level sediment (1,242.23 tons) to the C & C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan.
During the week ending September 1, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected nine sediment samples from Area 4B (K55285 through K55287, K55292, and K55297 through K55301), five sediment samples from Area 3B (K55288, K55289, and K55293 through K55295), two sediment samples from Area 5 (K55290 and K55291), and one sediment sample from Area 4B1 (K55296). Arcadis BBL also collected five water samples from the wastewater treatment system located at the 1N staging area (W_SA1N_InFlu_0008, W_SA1N_MidA_0008, W_SA1N_MidB_0005, W_SA1N_EffluA_0008, and W_SA1N_EffluB_0005), two water samples from the river (K30464 and K30647), and one soil sample from the topsoil that Arcadis BBL will use during restoration activities (K25728). Arcadis BBL continued taking turbidity readings from three locations in the Kalamazoo River (one upstream and two downstream of the excavation areas).
Terra continued the excavation of sediment from Area 4B and 3B; the grubbing and cleaning of Area 6B through 9B; the restoration of the north side of the river; and the building of the coffer dam wall immediately upstream of the Plainwell Dam. Terra shipped 34 loads of non-TSCA-level sediment (1,647.32 tons) to the C & C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan.
During the week ending September 8, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected three water samples from the wastewater treatment system located at the 1N staging area (W_SA1N_InFlu_0009, W_SA1N_MidA_0009, and W_SA1N_EffluA_0009), one sediment sample from Area 5 (K55302), two water samples from the river (K30649 and K30650), four sediment samples from Area 3B (K55303 through K55306), and six soil samples from the scraped access roads leading from the northern shore of the river to the 1N staging area (K25729 through K25734). Arcadis BBL continued taking turbidity readings from three locations in the Kalamazoo River (one upstream and two downstream of the excavation areas).
Terra continued its restoration activities along the north shore of the river; the excavation of sediment from the TSCA portion of the Area 3B; and the installation of the coffer dam wall. Terra also initiated the placement of topsoil in Area 4B; and the removal of stumps in Area 5. Terra shipped 26 loads of non-TSCA-level sediment (1,255.86 tons) to the C & C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan and 16 loads of TSCA-level sediment (597.49 tons) to Wayne Disposal in Belleville, Michigan.
Weyerhaeuser contractor RMT completed the construction of the porta dam immediately downstream of the Plainwell Dam (i.e. 12th Street Landfill); pumped the water from the containment area; excavated sediment from the containment area; and collected six cleanup verification sediment samples from the containment area.
During the week ending September 15, 2007, Arcadis BBL collected 11 water samples from the wastewater treatment plant located at the 1N staging area (W_SA1N_InFlu_0010 and W_SA1N_InFlu_0011, W_SA1N_MidA_0010 and W_SA1N_MidA_0011, W_SA1N_MidB_0006 and W_SA1N_MidB_0007, W_SA1N_EffluA_0010 and W_SA1N_Efflu_0011, W_SA1N_EffluB_0006 and W_SA1N_EffluB_0007, and one duplicate designated as W_SA1N_Dup_0002), two sediment samples from the TSCA portion of Area 3B (K55307 and K55308), and two water samples from the river (K30652 and K30653). Arcadis BBL continued taking turbidity readings from three locations in the Kalamazoo River (one upstream and two downstream of the excavation areas).
Terra built an access road from Area 6B to Islands 1 and 2; initiated and completed the excavation of sediment from Island 1 and 2; initiated the complete decommissioning of the 1N staging area and the partial decommissioning of the 2S staging area; completed the removal of the access road from the 1N staging area to the north shore of the river; completed the construction of the coffer dam wall upstream of the Plainwell Dam; and built an access road over the coffer dam wall along the south shoreline. Terra shipped 43 loads of non-TSCA-level sediment (1,819.24 tons) to the C & C Landfill in Marshall, Michigan and 8 loads of TSCA-level sediment (358.13 tons) to Wayne Disposal, Incorporated, in Belleville, MI.
To date, Terra has excavated approximately 5000 linear feet of shoreline along the Kalamazoo River and conducted restoration activities on approximately 4,800 linear feet. The total to date of material excavated and disposed is 20,611 tons which equates to approximately 15,900 cubic yards.
