The Site is located at 61 Endicott Street in Norwood, Massachusetts (Latitude and Longitude: 42o10'43"N, 71o13'2"W respectively) on a 13-acre property which includes a total of five buildings. Much of the exterior ground surface is a soil/gravel mix with some broken-up concrete and asphalt. Some areas are covered with small metal and glass debris.
The Site is part of an industrial/commercial enclave in the middle of a primarily residential neighborhood. The Site is bounded to the north, west, and east by residential properties, and to the south by industrial/commercial buildings and additional residential properties.
During the previous POLREP reporting period, EPA and property owner's contractor collected post excavation samples to determine if the contaminants were removed. Although the lead results were below the standards, the chromium results indicated that elevated levels remained on-site and additional investigation was necessary to delineate the extent of this contamination.
In July 2007, EPA and the Contractor conducted sampling to delineate the extent of the chromium contamination. Analysis of the samples indicated that the chromium concentrations were below the standards in all the samples collected around the location with the elevated chromium. In addition, the analyses indicated that the chromium was of the less toxic Cr+3.
On September 7, 2007, the Contractor excavated approximately twenty yards of chromium impacted soil, so the chromium concentrations left on site were reduced to below the standards and the goals set forth in the Administrative Order were achieved. The Final Superfund Site Closure Report was received on September 26, 2007.
No additional removal actions are planned for this site.
The Contractor will submit a final Site Closure Report.
