The Harvard Industries Site (Site) is located at 601 North Albion Street in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. The majority of the Site is located on a 66-acre parcel additional properties formerly owned by Harvard Industries include two parking areas, a building, and an area with a concrete foundation. These properties are located east of the 66-acre parcel across Albion Street.
Several companies have conducted foundry and manufacturing operations on Site since the early 1900s. Operations ceased at the Site in 2002. The majority of the Site operations were conducted on the southeast portion of the Site in the main building. This structure is a large concrete block and steel building that previously contained a laboratory, radiation room, offices, and manufacturing and machining facilities. Several other buildings also exist on Site, including a Quonset® building (north of the main building) that contains numerous containers filled with waste products, and a garage on the northwest portion of the Site, where indications of a potential diesel underground storage tank system off the southwest corner of the building are present. The Kalamazoo River is approximately 450 feet south of the Site. A small city park (McAuliffe Park) that includes a baseball field, playground, and picnic area is located on the northeast portion of the Site and occupies approximately 10 of the 66 acres.
U.S. EPA is currently conducting a Fund-Lead Removal Action at the site. For additional site information see Polrep 1.

On Tuesday, September 25, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew continued dismantling and removing the capacitors from the large electrical bank on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building. Another crew, with the use of a boom truck, removed the three large capacitors from the second floor rooms located in the central portion of the former Arc Melt building.
On Wednesday, September 26, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew continued dismantling and removing the capacitors from the large electrical bank on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building. Field Hazard Categorization (Hazcatting) of all the collected waste items has been completed (except laboratory wastes). One crew member is prepping known wastes for transportation and disposal. Soil samples were collected from around former electrical banks and electrical sub stations and the samples were sent to an independent laboratory for PCB analysis
On Thursday, September 27, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew completed dismantling and removing the capacitors from the large electrical bank on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building. A total of 427 capacitors were removed. Another crew began segregating wastes in the main on-site chemical laboratory and generating an inventory of lab wastes. On Friday, September 28, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew began dismantling and removing the capacitors from an electrical bank located on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building in a second floor electrical room. Another crew continued segregating wastes in the main lab and generating an inventory of lab wastes. On Saturday, September 29, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew finished dismantling and removing the capacitors from the electrical bank located on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building in a second floor electrical room. A total of 172 capacitors were removed. The crew then began dismantling and removing the capacitors from an electrical bank in the central portion of the former Arc Melt building on the first floor. Another crew finished segregating wastes in the main lab and completed an inventory of lab wastes.
On Sunday, September 30, 2007, no Site work occurred.
Planned Removal Actions • Continue dismantling electrical banks and staging capacitors for disposal. • Complete all sampling and hazard categorization activities. • Dispose of all containerized waste and waste identified in pits on site. • Excavate and dispose of soil/solids from 2 areas of contamination identified on site. • Lab-Pack chemicals from On-Site Laboratory.
Next Steps
• Finish setting up waste streams and securing disposal facilities. • Begin transporting known wastes to approved disposal facilities. • Begin dismantling and staging capacitors from all of the electrical rooms within the former Arc Melt building. • Begin planning for the removal and cleanup of pit containing PCB contaminated wastewater, oil, and sludge.
Security is on site during all non-working hours.
