The Harvard Industries Site (Site) is located at 601 North Albion Street in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. The majority of the Site is located on a 66-acre parcel additional properties formerly owned by Harvard Industries include two parking areas, a building, and an area with a concrete foundation. These properties are located east of the 66-acre parcel across Albion Street.
Several companies have conducted foundry and manufacturing operations on Site since the early 1900s. Operations ceased at the Site in 2002. The majority of the Site operations were conducted on the southeast portion of the Site in the main building. This structure is a large concrete block and steel building that previously contained a laboratory, radiation room, offices, and manufacturing and machining facilities. Several other buildings also exist on Site, including a Quonset® building (north of the main building) that contains numerous containers filled with waste products, and a garage on the northwest portion of the Site, where indications of a potential diesel underground storage tank system off the southwest corner of the building are present. The Kalamazoo River is approximately 450 feet south of the Site. A small city park (McAuliffe Park) that includes a baseball field, playground, and picnic area is located on the northeast portion of the Site and occupies approximately 10 of the 66 acres.

On Monday, October 1, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew member continued working on setting up transportation and disposal (T&D) for known site wastes. Another crew finished dismantling and removing the capacitors from the electrical bank located in the central portion of the former Arc Melt building on the first floor. A total of 51 capacitors were removed. Also completed was the removal of 24 capacitors containing PCBs from an electrical bank located on a separate portion of the site property.
On Tuesday, October 2, 2007, cleanup activities continued. T&D coordination continued. Staging of the collected capacitors continued in order to prepare them for off-site disposal. A total of 425 PCB containing capacitors, 252 Non-PCB containing capacitors and 3 PCB containing transformers have been collected and staged for disposal. The crew initiated removal of the surface water and oil from the former quench oil pit and began transferring it into a 20,000 gallon fractionation (frac) tank. The liquids in the quench oil pit were found to be contaminated with PCBs.
On Wednesday, October 3, 2007, cleanup activities continued. The crew began preparing wastes for bulking and disposal. Removal of wastes from the former quench oil pit continued.
On Thursday, October 4, 2007, cleanup activities continued. The crew continued preparing wastes for bulking and disposal. Removal of wastes from the former quench oil pit continued. One 20,000 gallon frac tank has been filled and another 20,000 gallon frac tank has been half filled with wastes from the quench oil pit.
On Friday, October 5, 2007, cleanup activities continued. The crew continued to pump out the former quench oil pit into the frac tank and also began decontaminating the former electrical banks that contained capacitors.
On Saturday, October 6, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew continued to pump out the former quench oil pit into the frac tank. Two 20,000 gallon frac tanks have been filled with oil/water and decontamination water from the former quench oil pit. RCRA empty waste containers were staged to prepare them for cutting/crushing and disposal..
On Sunday, October 7, 2007, no Site work occurred
On Monday, October 8, 2007, cleanup activities continued. One crew continued to clean out the former quench oil pit. As part of the decontamination of the quench oil pit, the crew began pulling out and washing off pieces of scrap metal from within the pit. The crew also started decontaminating the PCB-oil saturated floor of the former electrical bank room located on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building.
On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, cleanup activities continued. Decontamination of the former quench oil pit continued. Decontamination of the oil saturated floor of the former electrical bank room located on the eastern side of the former Arc Melt building was completed. Wipe samples for PCB analysis will be collected to confirm the success of the decontamination effort.
On Wednesday, October 10, 2007, cleanup activities continued. Decontamination of the former quench oil pit continued. The crew began moving and staging wastes into their bulking and disposal categories. T&D preparation activities continued.
On Thursday, October 11, 2007, cleanup activities continued. Decontamination of the former quench oil pit continued. An excavator with cutting sheers arrived on site and was being used to cut up the metal structures in the former quench oil pit to allow the crew access to complete the decontamination of this area. Staging of wastes into T&D groups continued and some limited bulking of acid and base waste streams occurred today. An X-Ray Florence Meter (XRF) was used to screen for elevated levels of lead in the soil of the yard surrounding the former Metal Salvage Shop to further define the known contamination there.
On Friday, October 12, 2007, cleanup activities continued. Decontamination of the former quench oil pit continued. The crew completed the moving and staging of wastes into their bulking and disposal categories.

• Complete the cleanout and removal of the former in ground quench oil pit.
• Complete the bulking of compatible laboratory wastes.

• Finish setting up waste streams and securing disposal facilities.
• Begin transporting known wastes to approved disposal facilities.
