Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania. The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II. As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities. Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties located in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.
EPA continues to provide security and a fire watch until the threat is mitigated. EPA has acquired full access for sampling. RERT began sampling activities in the fifth warehouse. Data continues to be evaluated as it is collected. NDT completed the survey of 4 warehouses.
GemChem continues to remove non-radioactive hazardous materials from the Strube Warehouses. Strube is completing this removal activity under the DEP Administrative Order.
The Strube Unified Command held its first meeting today. Weekly meetings are planned for the forseeable future. EPA will provide a summary of site activities and issues during this meeting.
The EPA OSC met with representatives from the Columbia Borough Council and with the Mayor of Columbia. Current site status was discussed as well as a possible future schedule for activities in the warehouses.
Approximately 150 drums of radium containing instruments packaged by a Strube contractor remain in one Columbia warehouse. These drums will be shipped off site under an ERRS subcontract.
Sampling will continue in the remaining 4 warehouses during the next 2 weeks. The EPA mobile command post will be moved to the Mt Joy warehouse tomorrow a.m.
