As required by the AOC, the PRP hired a structural engineer to assess the structural integrity of the 1924 and Cold Storage buildings, located at the northwestern section of the mill complex. Shoring work was required and installed prior to the commencement of removal activities.
All drums and containers of waste located throughout the Mace facility, the 1924 and Cold Storage buildings have been assessed, overpacked and staged for disposal. Mace has decided to dispose of the CS-1 material instead of relocating it off site for disposal. Mace is applying for an exemption from the US Department of Transportation before disposing of the material as a waste.
Debris from renovation activities at the mill, which was disposed outside on mill property, and the soils beneath the demo debris, have been sampled and analyzed to determine proper disposal.
Review the waste profiles and manifests for the drums prior to disposal.
Dispose of the CS-1 pallets once the DOT transport exemption is received.
Review analytical data from sampling of demo debris and the soils located beneath where the debris was stored for disposal.
Prepare for disposal of CS-1, drums and contaminated soils and demo debris to permitted disposal facilities.
Continue to coordinate with local and State agencies regarding evacuation plans in the event of a fire at the mill while the CS-1 material continues to be stored on site awaiting disposal.
The site is located in a residential area which includes several sensitive receptors (compromised respiratory system, elderly, children)and is within 100 ft of the Walloomsac River.
The site is located in an environmental justice area.
