At approximately 0100 on June 13, 2008, one locomotive and two cars of a CN train derailed just south of Oshkosh. As a result of the derailment, approximately 1,200 gallons of engine oil and diesel fuel escaped from the locomotive into Johnson Creek. Early afternoon, U.S. EPA and their START contractors responded to the site and met with WDNR and railroad officials. CN Railroad and their contractors, Veolia Environmental Services, placed booms and absorbent pads in the creek to minimize the impact to Lake Winnebago. The remainder of the diesel in the railcar was pumped out and the locomotive was stabilized. U.S. EPA performed air monitoring activities in the surrounding community, the initial results indicated non-detect for VOCs. The tracks were repaired and re-opened at approximately 11:30 pm on June 13, 2008.
U.S. EPA and START are continuing to work with WDNR and CN Railroad to assess the impacted areas, conduct air monitoring, notify residents of response activities, oversee the clean-up, and plan for the remediation of impacted areas.
CN Railroad will submit remediation work plan for impacted soils, water, and air for U.S. EPA and WDNR approval. Locomotive unit and derailed box cars will be erected and removed. Free product will be collected from Johnson Creek with Vac-Truck.
Continue to coordinate removal activities with WDNR, CN Railroad and local officials.
