Site Description
Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania.  The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II.  As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities.  Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.

Current Activities
EPA continues to provide security and a fire watch until the threat is mitigated.

An eighth shipment of waste was completed on July 9, 2008. A total of 886 drums have been shipped off site for disposal.  

EPA has finished response activities in the three Columbia Warehouses.  A total of 51 drums remain at the third Columbia warehouse.  These drums will be shipped on August 6, 2008.  The State of PA will complete a survey of the building the week following the shipment.  Strube will Decommission all Columbia warehouses per State of PA regulations at a future date.      

Mercury containing items have been identified in all three Columbia warehouses.  Strube has indicated that the company will handle the disposal of these items.  

An Exemption Action Memorandum was signed on July 18, 2008, increasing the site ceiling to $5.7 million.  In addition, the Site Scope of Work was streamlined and modified to better reflect the current site actions.  

EPA completed its pre-action sampling at the Mt Joy warehouse.  Removal activites began on July 24, 2008.  Drums will be shipped from this warehouse on August 6, 2008.

The EPA issued a Unilateral Order to Strube for Decommissioning of 2 Marietta warehouses.  The effective date of the Order was March 17, 2008.  To date Strube has complied with the Order.  EPA continues to coordinate its field activities with Strube.

EPA continues to host Unified Command meetings.  The next meeting will be held on August 6, 2008.        


Planned Removal Actions
Packaging and removal of radium containing items will continue.  The ninth shipment of drums and other items will take place on August 6, 2008.
