Strube, Inc. is an aircraft instrument sales and refurbishment contractor with a main office in Marietta, Pennsylvania. The founder of Strube, Inc. (now deceased) had purchased large quantities of military surplus aircraft parts beginning soon after the end of World War II. As the company’s inventory grew, Strube purchased additional warehouse space in several nearby communities. Currently, Strube owns warehouses on seven properties in the towns of Marietta, Columbia, Maytown, and Mt. Joy, all located in Lancaster County.
EPA continues to provide security and fire watch until the threat is mitigated.
An ninth shipment of waste was completed on August 6, 2008. A total of 1040 drums have been shipped off site for disposal. Three shipments of overpacked drums have been disposed of at the Hanford, Washington Facility.
EPA has finished response activities in the three Columbia Warehouses. The State of PA completed a survey of the last Columbia warehouse following the most recent shipment of waste. Strube will Decommission all Columbia warehouses per State of PA regulations at a future date.
Mercury containing items and miscellaneous hazardous materials have been identified in all three Columbia warehouses. Strube has indicated that the company will handle the disposal of these items.
An Exemption Action Memorandum was signed on July 18, 2008, increasing the site ceiling to $5.7 million. In addition, the Site Scope of Work was streamlined and modified to better reflect the current site actions.
Removal activites in Mt Joy began on July 24, 2008. A total of 103 drums were shipped from this warehouse on August 6, 2008.
The EPA issued a Unilateral Order to Strube for Decommissioning of 2 Marietta warehouses. The effective date of the Order was March 17, 2008. To date Strube has complied with the Order. EPA continues to coordinate its field activities with Strube.
EPA continues to host Unified Command meetings. The next meeting will be held on August 20, 2008.
Packaging and removal of radium containing items will continue. The tenth shipment of drums and other items will take place on August 19, 2008.
