In the spring 2008, Garvey Elevators notified the EPA of their impended bankruptcy and indicated that they would no longer operate the groundwater extraction and SVE systems and would discontinue providing alternative water supplies. A fund-lead Action Memoranda was signed by the EPA in May 2008, and the agency immediately assumed maintenance of the alternative water system.
In August 2008, samples were collected by the EPA of residences being supplied alternative water systems to gauge their effectiveness. Samples were also collected from the monitoring well network to determine current status of groundwater contamination. A thorough evaluation of the groundwater extraction and SVE systems were made at this time (neither system was currently in operation).
The following activities will be conducted by the EPA:
-- Continue supplying alternative water supplies.
--- The SVE system was partially activated and samples collected to determine efficacy of continued operation. An evaluation will be made after results of those samples are recieved.
--- The groundwater extraction system was operated for several days with 3 of the 8 wells. Pumps from the remaining 5 wells will be pulled and the well inspected in early September to determine operational problems.
--- Three vendors were contacted to prepare bids for enclosing the treatment systems as exposure to the elements was identified as a key problem with continued operation.
