US EPA Region 4 received a NRC Notification (#890188) reporting the release of approximately 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel to a ditch that runs into a unnamed creek. NC Outpost OSC was dispatched. The cause of the release was a single vehicle accident involving a tanker truck. The tanker truck was a A.T. Williams Oil Company Truck out of Winston-Salem, NC. The truck was carrying 9,000 gallons of diesel. The responsible party (RP) hired Eastern Environmental to conduct a emergency response. Eastern Environmental downloaded the diesel left on the tanker and estimated that 2,500 gallons was lost to the roadside ditch. Eastern Environmental mobilized a vac-truck, tanker, excavator and dump truck. A underflow dam was constructed to contain the spill, excavation of contaminated soil began, absorbant booms were placed downstream, active collection of diesel fuel using the vac-truck also was being done upon OSC's arrival.
Exit was closed by NC DOT and will remain closed for two days to allow for additional clean-up. Spill was contained, free product was collected and site will be referred to NC DENR for closure.
Samples will be collected to determine whether or not additional soil needs to be removed.
NC DENR will provide oversight regarding additional work.
