Current Activities
Preliminary analytical results were received for aroclors in two samples collected from soil excavated during the removal of the 24-inch Old Storm drain pipe. The results indicated that the soil was suitable to be used as backfill material. ERRS used the soil to begin backfilling Vault 116. The soil backfilled approximately two-thirds of the Vault. Gravel was used to backfill the remainder of the Vault.

ERRS constructed a new waste storage area. Wastes accumulated and consolidated during the removal were re-staged in the new area. This was done in preparation for upcoming temporary demobilization pending enforcement activities.

ERRS cleaned debris and sediment out of the north end of the western electrical conduit trench after waste that was temporarily stored in that area was re-staged in the newly constructed waste storage area.

ERRS received analytical data indicating that the filter media in the on-site water treatment system would require disposal as TSCA waste. ERRS removed the filter media and cleaned the water treatment tanks with the assistance of the Bluefield Sanitary Board using their vacuum/flusher truck. The material removed from the tanks was stored in the new storage area.

START collected an underground water sample from a location near the Degreaser Vault and the Area 1d sump. The sample will be analyzed for Trace Volatiles and PCB congeners.  The sample was collected from an excavated area that was allowed to fill with water.  The water routinely rises to levels just below the level of the concrete pad.

Bluefield Public Works completed the installation of the new sidewalk. The old sidewalk had been removed during the excavation of the old storm drain pipe between the west side alley and the Bluefield storm drain.

ERRS continued decontaminating equipment in preparation for temporary demobilization. ERRS also began sweeping the concrete pad and using a scrubber machine as part of the final Site clean up.

One excavator and the hammer attachment were returned to the vendor on 6/22/09.
